Before-and-After Photos From the Groomer App
Every groomer already takes pictures. The fluffy doodle after the groom is too good not to. The problem is where those pictures end up: in the groomer's personal camera roll, between their kids' birthday and a screenshot of a recipe. When a customer asks a question a week later, finding the right photo is a project. Photos taken in the groomer app stay with the appointment.
Photos Belong on the Appointment
The last article, Start, Skip, Complete: The Three Buttons That Run a Mobile Grooming Day, covered the buttons that run each appointment. Between Start and Complete, the groomer can take before-and-after photos right in the app.
Those photos are saved with that appointment, at that home, on that date. The office sees them on the job. Anyone looking at the appointment later sees them too, without asking the groomer to dig through their phone.
Why the Before Photo Matters Most
After photos are the fun ones. Before photos are the useful ones. A before photo shows what the groomer was working with when the pet came into the van:
- A matted coat, which explains why the cut is shorter than the owner expected.
- Long nails or an overgrown face, which show why the groom took longer.
- A coat condition the owner had not noticed, which backs up the note for the customer.
When an owner says “it's much shorter than last time,” a before photo of a matted coat answers the question better than any explanation at the door.
After Photos Show the Work
After photos are proof of the finished groom and the add-ons: the bandana, the clean face, the trimmed feet. They sit with the checklist and customer note on the job, so the office has a complete record of the visit. If a customer later questions whether something was done, the office can look at the checklist and the photos together.
Some groomers also like having a record of each pet's cut over time. Comparing this visit's after photo with the last one is a quick way to keep a regular's cut consistent, especially when a different groomer takes the appointment.
Photos for Multi-Pet Homes
At a home with several pets, it helps to take photos in the same order as the pets on the card. That way the office can tell which before photo goes with which after photo. A simple habit: before photo of each pet as it comes into the van, after photo of each pet before it goes back. Multi-pet homes are covered in Multi-Pet Homes on the Groomer App: Up to Four Pets on One Visit.
Taking Good Photos in a Van
A few practical tips for useful photos in a tight space:
- Use the same spot each time. On the table, under the van light, from roughly the same angle.
- Show the problem area. If the before photo is about mats behind the ears, get the ears in the frame.
- Keep it quick. One or two photos per pet is enough. The goal is a record, not a photo shoot.
- Wipe the lens. Phones in grooming vans collect hair and spray. A blurry photo helps nobody.
What Happens With the Photos
The photos stay with the appointment for the office to see. They are part of the record of the groom alongside the checklist and the note for the customer. When a customer calls with a question, the office pulls up the appointment and has the photos right there.
Grooming businesses also often want photos for their own marketing. If you want to post a groom on social media, ask the owner first. That is good manners, and many owners are happy to say yes when asked.
Photos also help inside the team. When a new groomer takes over a regular, the last visit's after photo shows them what the owner is used to seeing. That is often clearer than any written cut note, and it gives the new groomer something concrete to match on their first visit.
Photos Before Complete
The easiest rule for the team: take the after photo before tapping Complete. Once Complete is tapped, the groomer is mentally on the next stop, and the after photo is forgotten. Making photos part of the routine (before photo after Start, after photo before Complete) means every appointment has them.
Photos are one part of the record each appointment keeps. To see how they fit with the checklist, customer notes and invoice, visit the PetGroomBossPro dog grooming app page.
