Quoting Double-Coated Dogs and De-Shedding Without Surprises
Huskies, Malamutes, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Corgis. Double-coated dogs are some of the most common dogs on a grooming route, and some of the hardest to quote. The same dog can be a quick job one visit and a long one the next, depending on what the coat is doing. A few settings and habits keep those quotes honest.
Why Double Coats Are Hard to Price
Giant breeds, covered in Quoting Giant Breeds: Pricing Great Danes, Newfoundlands and Big Doodles, are priced mostly by size. Double coats are trickier because the coat changes the job more than the size does. A Medium double-coated dog in a heavy shed can take longer than a Large short-coated dog.
The booking page prices by service, size and add-ons. It does not know the coat type or how much the dog is shedding right now. So quoting double coats well means giving customers the right choices up front and checking the rest yourself.
Offer De-Shedding Clearly
You have two main ways to put de-shedding on the booking page:
- As a service. A “De-Shedding” service with its own base price, for customers who want that rather than a full groom or bath & brush.
- As an add-on. A “De-Shed Treatment” add-on customers can tick on top of a bath & brush or full groom.
Many groomers use both: the service for owners who want a dedicated de-shed visit, the add-on for regular clients who want it included now and then. Either way, the price comes from your settings, and the size add-on still applies per pet. A Large Golden Retriever booked for a bath & brush with a De-Shed Treatment ticked gets the bath & brush base, the Large add-on and the add-on price, all shown before the customer sends the request. Add-on pricing in general is covered in Add-On Prices on the Booking Page: Teeth Brushing, Nail Grinding, De-Shed and More.
Use the Note for Heavy Coats
The note under the price is shown on every booking, so it can cover double coats too. Something like “Heavy shedding or matting may cost extra. Final price confirmed at the appointment” sets expectations for the double-coated dog in a heavy shed without making the page complicated.
Keep it about price. What a coat needs is a grooming decision, and anything about the dog's skin or health is a conversation for the owner and their vet.
Save the Coat Type on the Pet
Once a customer is booked, coat type lives on the pet. PetGroomBossPro has Short / Smooth, Medium, Long, Double Coat, Curly / Doodle, Wire and Hairless. Marking a dog Double Coat means every groomer who opens the appointment card in the groomer app knows what is coming.
Use the notes line for the details: “Heavy undercoat, plan extra dry time,” or “Owner prefers de-shed every visit.” Add-ons are ticked on the job, and the next visit fills in from the last one, so a client who gets a De-Shed Treatment every time has it there automatically.
Quote Heavy Coats by Estimate
Some double-coated dogs need a real quote. A big Malamute that has not been groomed in a long time, or a household with three Huskies in a heavy shed, is worth an estimate rather than an instant price.
Build it from your service list: the service, the De-Shed Treatment, any other add-ons, and a description that explains what the price covers. The customer approves it online, and the approved estimate becomes the job with the pet details, including coat type, carried over.
Seasonal Swings
Double-coated dogs often have busier shedding times of year. If your clients ask for de-shedding more at certain times, you can plan for it. A few ideas:
- Mention it ahead of time. A text to regular clients with double-coated dogs that de-shed visits are available.
- Adjust add-ons on the schedule. On the Recurring Clients list you can change the price for upcoming visits if a client wants de-shedding included for a stretch.
- Watch your timing. Visits with heavy de-shedding take longer; leave room on the route.
Two-way texting from the office makes the reminder easy, and replies come back to you.
Make the Result Visible
De-shedding is one of those services where the customer may not see what was done until later. The grooming checklist on the groomer app covers each pet step by step with a note for the customer, and the office can print a Grooming Report. Before and after photos are saved with the job. That record helps the customer understand what they paid for.
