Skipped Grooming Visits: What the Groomer Notes and What the Office Does Next
Every mobile groomer has pulled up to a house, knocked, waited and texted, and gotten nothing back. Or found the dog out with the dog walker. Or arrived to a power cut at a home where the van runs off the customer's outlet. A skipped visit is part of the job. What matters is that it does not disappear.
Skip Is Different From Reschedule
Moving a visit before the day starts is covered in Rescheduling a Grooming Appointment Without Wrecking the Rest of the Day. A skip is what happens when the problem shows up at the curb, with the groomer already there.
In the PetGroomBossPro groomer app, every card has three buttons: Start, Skip and Complete. Skip is the honest answer when a visit cannot happen. It takes the stop off the groomer's list for the day and sends it back to the office with a reason.
The Note Is the Important Part
A skip without a reason leaves the office guessing. A skip with a short, specific note tells the office exactly what to do next:
- “Nobody home, knocked and texted at 10:40, no reply.”
- “Dog not here, neighbor says he's at daycare today.”
- “No power at the outlet, owner says they'll call.”
- “Gate code changed, couldn't get in.”
- “Owner asked to come back next week, cat is unwell.”
Good notes say what happened and what the groomer already tried. That saves the office from texting the customer to ask something the groomer already knows.
What the Office Sees
As soon as the groomer taps Skip, the office sees that visit as skipped with the note. There is no end-of-day phone call needed to find out what got done. From there the office usually does three things:
- Contacts the customer. A two-way text: “Sorry we missed you today. Want to try Thursday at 2:00?”
- Puts the visit on a new day. Ideally the next day a van is already in that neighborhood.
- Fixes the cause. If the gate code changed, update the van notes so the next visit shows the new code. If the outlet is unreliable, note it.
Using the Gap in the Route
A skip opens up time in the groomer's day. Sometimes that time is best used catching up on a long groom that is running behind. Other times the office can use it:
- Pull a later stop forward, so the groomer is ahead of schedule instead of waiting.
- Text the next customer and ask if they are ready early.
- Slot in a nearby nail trim or quick request from the No Day tab.
The office map shows each van by GPS, which makes it easy to see who is nearby. More on that in Van GPS on the Office Map: Dispatching Mobile Groomers During the Day.
Skips on Repeat Schedules
When a visit on a repeat schedule is skipped, the rest of the client's schedule stays where it was. Their next visit is still booked on its planned day, time and van. That is usually right; one missed visit should not shift the next six.
If the skipped visit is rebooked a few days later, check whether it is now too close to the next planned visit. If it is, talk to the customer about whether they want both, or whether to move the next one. If a client is skipped repeatedly, the pattern is worth a conversation, and maybe a different day or time on the Recurring Clients list.
Skip notes are also useful later. When a client asks why a visit was missed, or when you are deciding whether a client's day or time still suits them, the notes from past skips are on the record. A pattern such as “nobody home” three times on Friday afternoons is a clear sign that the slot, not the client, is the problem, and a different day on the Recurring Clients list may fix it for good.
Fewer Skips in the First Place
The best skip is the one that never happens. Most no-shows come down to an owner who forgot or was not sure when the van was coming, and that is what the automatic alerts are for. Owners who choose the night-before reminder get one with their time. The on-the-way text tells them the van is heading their way, and the arrived text tells them it is at the curb. The live map in the customer app shows their place in line.
Those alerts are covered in their own articles in this section. For the full scheduling picture — Start, Skip and Complete, reminders, texts and van GPS — see the mobile grooming scheduling software page.
No Skip Without a Reason
PetGroomBossPro groomers tap Skip with a note, and the office sees the reason right away and puts the visit back on the schedule.
