Past Notes in the Groomer App: How the Last Groom Went, Before This One Starts

The best groomers remember things. The owner asked for the ears shorter last time. The matting behind the legs was bad in the spring. The dog was much calmer once the dryer was turned down. That memory is worth a lot, but it is hard to keep for a whole book of regulars, and impossible to share when someone else takes the van. Past notes put it on the card.

What Past Notes Are

The previous article, Van Notes in the Groomer App: Parking, Outlets, Water Hookups and Gate Codes, covered the notes about the home. Past notes are about earlier visits. When a groomer opens an appointment, the card shows notes from previous appointments at that home, so the groomer can see what was written last time and the time before.

That is different from the pet's own notes line. The pet's notes are the current, standing instructions: the cut, the behavior. Past notes are the history: what happened at particular visits.

Why History Helps

Some things only make sense over time:

None of that is advice about how to groom. It is a record of what happened, so the next person starts informed.

Past Notes and the Customer Note

Each visit also has a note for the customer on the grooming checklist, something like “matting behind the ears is coming back.” That note goes to the customer on the Grooming Report. Reading last visit's customer note before starting today's groom closes the loop: if the groomer told the owner something was coming back, they can check whether it did and say so at the door.

The customer note is covered in The Note for the Customer: Telling Pet Owners What the Groomer Noticed Today.

Reading Past Notes Quickly

Past notes are most useful when the groomer reads them before the pet comes into the van, not halfway through. A simple routine at each stop:

It takes less than a minute. The difference shows up at the door, when the groomer can say “last time we kept the face a little longer, still good?” instead of asking the owner to explain the cut again.

Writing Notes That Will Be Useful Later

Past notes are only as good as what gets written. The notes that help most later are:

If a note in the history should become the new standard (“owner wants it shorter from now on”), update the pet's notes so it carries forward as the instruction. That is in Updating a Pet's Notes So the Next Groom Starts Right.

Past Notes for the Office

The office sees the same history on the job. When a customer calls with a question (“was she matted last time too?”), the office can answer without calling the van. When the owner is reviewing a regular who has skipped several visits, the past notes show why. The history is the same for everyone, because it lives on the appointments, not in anyone's head.

Past notes also make the first visit with a new groomer feel less new to the pet owner. The groomer can mention something from two visits ago, like the time the owner asked for a longer tail, and the owner hears that the business remembers their dog, not just that a different person showed up this time.

Starting Every Groom Informed

Past notes are a quiet feature. Nobody notices them until they save a groom from going wrong, or until a new groomer handles a long-time regular like they have known the dog for years. To see how past notes sit with the rest of the card, visit the PetGroomBossPro dog grooming app page.
