Closest First or Furthest First: Auto-Routing a Mobile Grooming Day From the Shop

Putting six or eight grooming appointments in a sensible driving order by eye is doable. Doing it every night, for every van, while also answering texts and planning tomorrow's pets, gets old fast. Auto-routing does the first pass for you in one click, so your time goes into the few stops that need a human decision.

Where Auto-Routing Lives

Routing starts from the day's confirmed appointments, which are explained in The Scheduled List: Reading the Grooming Day by Date and by Van. Filter to a van, and the auto-route options order that van's stops.

PetGroomBossPro offers two auto-route choices, both measured from your shop or home base: Closest First and Furthest First. The groomer's phone shows the result in the same order, so once you route the day, the groomer is working from it.

Closest First

Closest First starts with the appointment nearest the shop and works outward, ending the day at the far end of the service area. It suits days when:

The trade-off is the drive home. A Closest First day ends far away, so the last leg is the longest one, and that drive happens when everyone is tired.

Furthest First

Furthest First sends the van to the far end of the area first and works back toward home. It suits days when:

The trade-off is the start. The first appointment is the furthest one, so the van leaves earlier, and a late start pushes every stop behind it.

Auto-Route, Then Adjust

Grooming appointments have set times, and auto-routing orders stops by distance, not by the clock. That is fine; it is a starting point. The usual routine is:

  1. Filter the Scheduled list to one van and auto-route Closest First or Furthest First.
  2. Look down the list for appointments whose times do not match their place. A 4:00 appointment that landed second needs to move down; an 8:30 that landed fifth needs to move up.
  3. Set the order by hand for those few stops, and check the times on either side still leave room for the groom and the drive.
  4. Glance at the pets. A long groom between two fixed times may need its time changed and the customer told.

Most days only a handful of stops need moving. The detail on manual ordering is in Setting Grooming Route Order by Hand When the Map Is Not the Whole Story.

Routing Works Better When the Book Is Grouped

Auto-routing can only order the stops it is given. If a van has one appointment in each corner of the service area, no order makes that a short day. The bigger win is booking repeat clients so each van's days cluster by area: north side on Tuesdays, east side on Thursdays.

Because repeat visits keep the same weekday, time and van, a book that is grouped once stays grouped. The Pending Jobs map helps here too. When a new request sits on the No Day tab, you can see it on the map next to existing visits and place it on the day when a van is already nearby. Grouping by area is covered in Neighborhood Days: Grouping Mobile Grooming Appointments by Area.

Grouping also makes the choice between Closest First and Furthest First matter less. When every stop on a van's Tuesday sits in the same few neighborhoods, the difference between the two is mostly about where the day starts and ends, not how far the van drives in total. That leaves you free to pick the direction that suits your fixed times and your evening plans.

Which One Should You Use?

There is no single right answer, and plenty of groomers use both depending on the day. A simple rule of thumb: pick the option that puts your fixed early appointments near the front of the list. If your early clients are close to home, use Closest First. If they are out at the edge of your area, use Furthest First. Then hand-adjust whatever is left.

You can also route each van differently. A van doing a monthly account day at a senior living community has one stop and needs no routing at all, while a second van doing six houses gets routed normally.

For everything else the schedule does around routing — Pending Jobs, saved views, route sheets, reminders and van GPS — see the mobile grooming scheduling software page.
