Hiring a Second Groomer for Your Mobile Grooming Business
Hiring a second groomer is a bigger step than hiring a bather. A bather speeds up your day. A second groomer takes over customers, pets and cuts that you built relationships around. Done well, it lets the business take on far more work and gives you room to breathe. Done badly, it costs you regulars who liked things the way you did them. The difference is mostly in the handover.
Bather First, or Groomer First?
The bather option was covered in Hiring a Bather for Your Mobile Grooming Business: Two People, One Van. Some owners go straight to a second groomer instead, especially when a qualified groomer they trust becomes available.
A second groomer makes sense when your book is full, customers are waiting, and you want the business to keep growing without you working longer days. Before you hire, talk with your accountant about the costs of an employee or contractor, and check what applies in your area. This guide focuses on the running side.
Share the Same Van or Split the Days
A second groomer does not always mean a second van right away. Some owners start by sharing one van: the owner runs it some days and the new groomer runs it on the others. That gets the van working more days of the week without buying another vehicle.
In PetGroomBossPro, every employee has their own personal PIN and van assignment. When the new groomer runs the van, they log into the groomer app with the company login and their own PIN and see that day's appointments in order with set times. When you are ready for two vans at once, that is covered in Adding a Second Van to a Mobile Grooming Business.
Your Notes Become Their Training
The single biggest help to a new groomer is good notes on every pet. If your cut notes live in your head, the new groomer has to guess, and customers notice. Before the new groomer starts, spend some time making sure each pet's notes line says what you actually do.
Each pet in PetGroomBossPro has its name, dog or cat, breed, size, coat, rabies due date and a notes line, such as “#7 blade body, teddy bear face, leave the tail full” or “nervous with the dryer.” The next visit at that home fills in from the last one, so the new groomer sees exactly what you wrote. Past notes show on the card too, so they can see what was said on earlier visits.
Van notes matter just as much: where to park, the gate code, where the outlet and water hookup are. A groomer who arrives knowing where to park starts the visit calm.
Hand Over Clients Carefully
Regulars are loyal to their groomer, not just the business. When you move a client to the new groomer, tell them first. A short, personal text works: “Hi! I've brought on a groomer I trust, and she'll be taking care of Luna from next month. All of Luna's notes are in the system, and I'm always here if you have questions.”
Start with clients who are easygoing and pets with simple cuts. Keep the most particular customers with you until the new groomer has settled in. When you are ready to move a client, change the van, day or time for upcoming visits from the Recurring Clients list, and every future visit moves with it.
Keep the Work Consistent
Two groomers will never groom identically, but customers should feel the same standard. The grooming checklist on the groomer app helps here. For each pet, the groomer works through coat and skin on arrival, brush-out and de-matting, bath, drying, haircut, sanitary trim, paw pads, nails, ears, eyes and face, and final brush-out, plus the add-ons. They can leave a note for the customer.
Before and after photos are saved on the job, so you can see the new groomer's work without riding along. The office sees the checklist on the job and can print a Grooming Report for the customer. That gives you a way to give feedback early and fairly.
See the Day From the Office
Once someone else is running appointments, you need to know how the day is going without calling every hour. Van GPS shows on the office map. As the groomer taps Start and Complete, you see each appointment move, and Complete creates the invoice and can charge the card on file. Skips arrive with the groomer's note.
The time clock records the groomer's hours on the same phone. Office user roles let you control what each person can see and change in the office side of the software.
Growing From Here
A second groomer is the point where a mobile grooming business stops being one person's job and becomes a small company. It is also when your weekly office routine matters most. That routine is covered in The Weekly Office Routine for a Mobile Grooming Business.
